WELCOME 2010!

Everyone

Welcome to the 2010 winter season! I am thoroughly excited with the amount of drive, talent, and pure numbers that showed up on the RHS pool deck last Tuesday night. We have a lot of work to do and a lot of fun to be had.

I encourage all of you to watch water polo videos on you tube and throughout the web. By doing so, you can create in your head the type of player you want to become. Once you have this type of player in mind. Start to research and notice the little things professional and college level water polo players do that make them the players they are. It could be physically. maybe you need to start hitting the weight room every day or pump out 100 push ups and and 100 sit ups when you wake up each morning. Do they keep the ball out of the water, where do they look before and during a shot or pass? LIttle things that you can try to do one at a time at practice can have huge differences in your game. Set a 2 month goal. In 2 months we are going to Winterfest to show so cal what One Way is all about.

Practices will always be Tuesday and Thursday. I added a "practice schedule" box on the right column of this blog so you can check when times change.

4-2-1

Saturday morning we had another tough game against Shores wpc. This team is mostly made of guys from Long Beach Wilson which has around 10 cif championships. The young, unheard-of, One Way team played three even quarters with this team. The 4th quarter would determine a win for shores water polo club but nothing to be ashamed of for one way.

The rest of the tournament consisted of a 4 game winning streak!
First we knocked off Offshore WPC. We didn't know what to expect from this team.
Later that evening we played South Bay United. This was a frustrating game. We kept our heads in it and continued to play hard defense and finished the day with a win. An error in the schedule meant a rematch early Sunday morning with SBU that we also won.

Three wins in a row gave us the opportunity to play against Ventura WPC for our final match of the weekend. Unfortunately we would be playing this game without one of our leaders in goals and steals, Tommy Grall. However, everyone stepped up to play a tough team and we came through with an exciting win by one goal.

This was a tournament with a mostly strong, well known clubs that underestimated OWWPC. They gave us brutal games. The guys came through tough on defense and shut down any offense that was thrown at them. Our roster this weekend was made up of a 13 and a 14 year old playing against guys 3 years older and 80 lbs bigger. We also had a brand new goalie that did an exceptional job. Most of this team will be back again next year for the same 16 and under qualifier. I confident that these boys have an excellent chance of competing in the 2010 Junior Olympics.

Thank you to all parents who came down! Your support is crucial to our success as a new club. Players, congratulations on an awesome weekend of water polo!

Friday Results

Two great games against tough teams!

The first was against LA Water Polo. LAWPC is a powerful club. They have a ton of kids try out to be on their teams and always have a strong program. It was a tough game but a loss that we could swallow. Everyone played good and it was nonetheless a decent start to a weekend of water polo.

Our next game was a big improvement. Trojan WPC is another strong club that is always a competitor in the JOs. We gave them a big run for their money today that resulted in a tie game. If this game was about opportunities, we crushed Trojan. Everyone played extremely heads up water polo. The defense played by One Way in this game was superb and demonstrated that One Way Water polo is a group of well discipline athletes.

The tie put us in a position to wait for Trojan and LAWP to duke it out and hope that LAWP would beat Trojan by a greater goal differential. LAWP only walked away with a win by only 1 goal. We, as a result will take third in our bracket.

OWWP 16s have nothing to hang their heads about.

We have 3 games to play on Saturday.

Victories in the Valley

What a fantastic day of water polo!

We started out our day with a 7-4 victory over Bakersfield WPC. We had unbelievable defense and showed a new level of play as a team. Tommy grall 1 goal 1 steal, Justin Savaso 1 goal 1 assist, Jake Wemple 2 steals, Collin Cusak 1 steal 1 assist, Carson Dacus 1 assist, Nestor Nunez 1 goal, Vinny Villapondo 3 steals, Nolan Coolidge 1 steal, Zach Madison 1 goal, AJ Franklin 1 goal, Andy Boniface 1 goal. Jake Eszes 2 saves 2 steals 2 assists, Jason Badua 4 saves 1 steal 3 assists.

After only a one game break (and plenty of brownies, nachos, and candy from the snack bar (lays are okay)), the One Way boys came out with another win against Santa Clarita Valley. At the end of the third quarter the score was 5-5. A few clutch saves by Jason Badua fed our counter and we pulled ahead 8-5 for a shut out quarter and our second win. Tommy Grall 2 goals 1 drawn ejection, Justin Savaso 1 goal, Carson Dacus 2 assists, Collin Cusak 1 goal 1 steal, Nestor Nunez 1 goal, Vinny Villapondo 1 goal 1 drawn ejection, Zach Madison 1 steal, Tommy Reyes 1 steal, AJ Franklin 2 goals 1 drawn ejection.

We had an impressive showing at Bakersfield that demonstrated what a group of athletes from different ends of town can do in just a few short months with each other. Each and every one of you should congratulate yourself. Figure out what you can do better as an individual and as a team player. Winterfest is in two weeks.

Practices this week are Monday and Wednesday nights at PNAC 6:30-9:00 PM. Come ready to work.

Saturday, January 24, 2009
